1997年12月2日，苏帕潘出生于老挝首都万象。万象被很多老挝人理解为“月城”；但是万象在老挝语中还有一个意思是檀木，中国古书中汉译为“栴檀”，因此也可翻译为“垣栴”，及檀城。
